Portrait of Captain Mike Reekie MMV

Portrait - Canadian Infantry Officer
Private Collection

Portraits

Portrait painting is very personal and uncompromising. It is either spot on accurate, or it is not! Great care and time is taken to ensure that the essence of the individual is captured with sufficient detail to ensure the likeness is captured. A word of caution however, these are paintings and not photographs. The paint and brushstrokes will remain evident serving to add to the unique quality of the finished portrait.

The starting point for a portrait is a photograph. This may be an old black and white photo of a past relative, a colour photo of yourself from former service, or even a group photo where you may or may not want the others included! Regardless of source, the photo must be clear and contain sufficient detail to work from. If nothing suitable is on hand, a photo taken by the artist John Perry may be arranged.

If possible it is preferred John meet the subject of the portrait. If this is not feasible then the portrait will be undertaken from a distance, with constant image updates provided to the client as the portrait develops. Shocks and surprises at the end of the project are avoided, except positive ones of course!

The preferred medium is watercolour on board (as illustrated to the right) but portraits may also be rendered in pencil (see the online Gallery), acrylic, or oil.

Major Adolf Galland from the battle of Britain Commemorative Set

Full-figure Study - Major Adolf Galland
From the Battle of Britain Commemorative Set

Full-figure Studies

Full-figure studies fall into two categories: those created by the artist John Perry for commercial sale, and those commissioned by organizations either for display or for sale as prints.

Each painting features a meticulously researched figure study rendered in watercolour and gouache on board, with a suitable background rendered in pencil. This background may simply be a piece of terrain typical of the environment the figure would likely be seen in, or may be a depiction of a piece of equipment directly related to the subject. The example to the right is of Luftwaffe Major Galland with his unique Bf109E in the background, historically accurate to the summer of 1940 and the Battle of Britain. The Battle of Britain Commemorative Set is available at the Online Store.

Organizations, such as military regiments, may want to create sets depicting the history of the unit. Museums may wish to augment public displays and exhibitions with unique and attractive sets of illustrations, which in turn may be offered as prints to help financially support the organization.

Commemorative print of Smokey Smith VC

Commemorative Print - Smokey Smith VC
Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Regimental Association

Commemorative Collages

Collages are the depiction of an event or a passage of time in one single piece of art, as opposed to the collection sets of individual pictures described above. They are usually commemorative in nature and reproduced in limited edition print form.

They begin with the harvesting of as much information as possible regarding the subject, written descriptions of an event or action, photos of individuals, equipment, artifacts, the list is long and extensive. In this case, "More is Best" as a lack of information or reference can greatly hinder the creative process.

Once the available information is assembled, a variety of layout sketches are prepared and, once agreed upon by the client, are rendered in the medium chosen. This may be pencil, coloured pencil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic, oil, or a combination of two or more of these mediums.

The example to the right depicts "Smokey" Smith VC who, at the time of the commission, was the sole surviving Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross. John met with Smokey, discussed his exploits (on and off the battlefield!) and prepared the art for reproduction in a limited print run. Unable to sign the prints, Smokey painstakingly applied his signature to the original art (just under the red patch), possibly one of the last times he signed his signature as this was shortly before his death in August 2005. A small amount of Remarqued versions of this print are available at the Online Store.
